present our semi-annual half day program:

The Neuropsychology of Sports Concussion:

Separating Fact From Fiction

William B. Barr Ph.D., ABPP

Chief of Neuropsychology, NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

Associate Professor of Neurology & Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine

Over the past 20 years, there has been an explosion of interest in the topic of sports concussion, as seen through the activities of professionals and in the media. The field of neuropsychology has been central to the discussion. This presentation will track the course of how neuropsychological methods have been used to study and care for athletes with concussion. We will begin with a description of the pathophysiology and biomechanics of sports concussion, followed by a critical review of the methodology that has developed for assessment of concussion signs and symptoms. The presentation will address a number of controversial topics including the need for baseline neuropsychological testing, the value of computerized assessment, and the true risk for developing long-term effects, such as post-concussion syndrome or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. It will end with a thorough review of return to play guidelines, intervention strategies, and a discussion on needs for the future.
